An Army-style Dinner

In recent weeks our family has begun a pen-pal correspondence with a family from the Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa. We have done this with the hopes that our children will begin to have a better understanding of the life of a soldier and his family. It has been helpful for us to begin to understand the work that goes into becoming a soldier and the impact on the family. In the family that we are getting to know, their Dad has recently been deployed to Afghanistan for 6-9 months. This family is similar to ours--6 kids in close to the same age range. That has really helped our kids in understanding the sacrifice--imagine being without our Daddy for that long!

This week we received a box in the mail full of IMP's--army rations. Well, that made the dinner decision easy last night!


The meals get cooked in the bag in boiling water.

There is even bread in the meals!



This is an omelette with mushroom sauce.

The kids were excited to try it out!

But not so much after they tasted it...



Yup, they didn't like it!

Thanks Jillian! You've managed to stop anyone in this house from becoming a soldier! Or at least helped us to understand another of the sacrifices that soldiers make. May God bless our soldiers in Afghanistan.
